Dr Xand van Tulleken

Dr. Xand has presented numerous shows for the BBC and Channel 4 including: Blow Your Mind, Horizon, Secret Life of Twins, How to Lose Weight Well and Medicine Men Gone Wild.

Xand, alongside his twin brother Chris, present CBBC’s Operation Ouch! The series has been a huge success, involving self-experimentation from the twins to find weird and wonderful ways of teaching kids about the human body. The sixth series will start filming later this year and the show has won two children's BAFTA awards plus a Broadcast Award for Best Children's programme.

Their 2014 BBC1 Horizon on the Sugar V Fat debate was hugely successful and garnered a lot of press attention. Xand's Daily Mail article on this very subject was shared over 33,000 times online. Their second Horizon, Is Binge Drinking Really That Bad?, TX’d to further acclaim. Xand's 1st solo Horizon about the online dating phenomenon was shown last April and he gained many admirers! Last year also saw Chris and Xand report on the harrowing winter migrant crisis in Frontline Doctors for BBC One and Xand presented his second solo Horizon on Sports Doping. Xand also presents Channel 4's signature health show, How to Lose Weight Well, which is into its second series. Xand released a book to accompany the series which went straight to the top of the Amazon book charts.

Xand was at the forefront of Ebola research appearing on US networks speaking about the crisis including Al Jazeera, MSNBC, FOX5 and BBC world service. He was the health reporter for CNN International. Xand has also been filming his first US series for MSNBC.

Xand is no stranger to practising medicine in extreme environments; his first television series, Medicine Men Go Wild (Channel 4), saw Xand testing out tribal medicine that involved everything from Congolese hallucinogens to having large spikes stuck into his face in Indonesia. He and his twin brother Chris went on to head BBC1’s The Secret life of Twins which focused on the theories of nature vs. nurture with identical twins.

Xand and Chris grew up in London, they both studied medicine at Oxford University and Xand specialised in Tropical medicine. As a junior doctor he worked in the genocide in Darfur and this inspired a passion for the politics and medicine of conflict zones which lead to his Academic appointment in the US. He now works between New York, Harvard and various humanitarian crises all over the world.
